Widow details downward spiral of criminalist during murder probe

Kevin Brown started crossing days off a calendar. Soon, he hoped, San Diego police detectives investigating a cold-case murder from 1984 would conclude he had nothing to do with it.

He and his wife, Rebecca, even made plans for a celebratory getaway to a new motel in Imperial Beach, she testified Tuesday in federal court.

The investigation didn’t end, though, and according to his wife, Brown, 62, grew more despondent as he realized the detectives — and some of his own relatives — believed he might be guilty. He killed himself.
